]]> Sat Oct 24 2009 RAF Northolt Night Photo Shoot ~ 3rd September 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1763598.html After the visit to RAFM Hendon and following some intake of food in central London, I made my way during the evening rush hour on the Central line to the suburbs of west London and South Ruislip Tube Station. It’s then a short walk to the White House Gate entrance of RAF Northolt for ‘Night Shoot IV’. Following registration and the issue of passes, we congregated at the entrance to the pan and were given a safety briefing by the project officer Flt Lt Jim Bradshaw before being let loose airside. Unfortunately some of the aircraft that had planned to participate were tasked differently, or broke, so were unable to attend. A slightly different format from before as the ‘Night Shoot’ started just before the sun went down but gradually got darker and fortunately the weather held as while I was at Hendon, a rain front had passed through. A ‘Navy 100’ Hawk from RNAS Culdrose, No.208 (R) Sqn Hawk from RAF Valley and a Tucano from RAF Linton-on-Ouse had made it to the line up along with the resident 32(TR) Sqn BAe125 and 3x Agusta 109s. The RAF Hawk departed during the event on a night navigation exercise. The Metropolitan Police Air Support Unit Eurocopter EC145 based at Lippitts Hill, Loughton dropped in for a short visit. An added bonus was the arrival of a Brazilian Air Force Embraer VC-99B, based at Brasilia, dropping off some passengers and after permission from the aircraft captain, who apparently was only to happy that we wanted to photograph his aeroplane, it was added to the line up. Many thanks to the Station Commander Gp Capt van den Berg and every one at SERCO, and for the lift to and from the gate gentlemen, and especially Phil & Lee and their band of volunteers for an enjoyable evening and roll on ‘Night Shoot V’ in December. An even more pleasant surprise later on that morning when I was invited out onto the airfield to photograph the Corsair ground running. As the Corsair was in the middle of the hanger, it meant that a few of the collection had to be moved from inside to outside and a photo opportunity not to be missed. I also had an invite across the barrier for a look see at the progress being made on the P-47. Many thanks to everyone at The Fighter Collection and 'Team P-47' for a very enjoyable morning. ARCo were also moving some of their fleet about from the north side of Hanger 2 as Spitfire AR213 was moved to Hanger 4. In the afternoon there was some flying, first by a Hercules from Mildenhall that did a slow wheels down pass and then a fast wheels down pass before heading into the west. A bit later, the 'Kent' Spitfire did a run and break and parked up in the ARCo compound. As it was parking up, Richard Grace arrived in the family run about and then proceeded to perform a series of most excellent aerial maneuvers before landing. With the installation of the Royal Aircraft Factory FE2b in the Bomber Command Hall and the building works almost finished in the Battle of Britain Hall, it was time to have a wander around with my wide-angle lens and tripod. A black painted aeroplane in a dark part of the museum with blue building supports around it is not the way the display an aircraft like the FE2b. The BE2b was a bit more accessible now so why the FE2b couldn't have been parked where it was or even the vacant display area in front of the Lancaster where the Hawker Typhoon used to be would be more preferable that where it is now. Having heard that new lighting was going to be installed in the BoB Hall during the building works, I thought, rather mistakenly as it turned out, that some one had seen the light (pun intended). What I wasn't expecting were multicoloured LED, ground mounted, available from any good DIY store, up lighters throwing horrible colours onto the undersides of the aircraft. A bad ambiance made even worse. On the plus side, the Walrus looks much better in natural light now that the other end of the hall is fully glazed. Pete Kynsey then proceeded to throw it around the Cambridgeshire sky with Martyn, one of the TFC engineers sitting in the back. I think he was enjoying it. MH434 departed for the Cosby show closely followed by the Cub, and in the strong wind, took about 10 minutes to reach the end of the airfield. ]]> Fri Sep 4 2009 American Air Day, Duxford ~ 21st August 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1744147.html I was expecting more than 2 jumpers from the MC-130P Combat Shadow, but they did well in the stiff breeze. The rain actually came over lunch time and cleared just as the Combat Search & Rescue demo started. A pair of F-15E Strike Eagles did a couple of tight turns over the airfield pulling vapour trails in the damp air, that could have done with a bit of re-heat and noise, as the HH-60G Pave Hawk came in at low level across the M11 to pick up a downed pilot. I then trekked up to the tank bank, via the working dog display and the birds of prey of the Bird Control Unit. By now there was blue sky and sunshine but still breezy. The afternoon flying started with a quartet of F-15E Strike Eagles flying over in formation, turning over Bedfordshire, and coming back again. Next up was a KC-135 Stratotanker flypast with boom extended, and went a bit further than Bedfordshire to turn, and then the F-15s + tanker returned for a formation flypast. Next up was the home team of Cub, F-86, Stearman, and P-51 'Ferocious Frankie'. B-17 'Sally B' took to the air and did a fly past with 'Frankie' before going into it's routine which included at one point trailing smoke from the engine position that has caused all the problems. Following the conclusion of the show, a plethora of war birds departed for Shoreham before the HH-60G and MC-130P fired up and took their leave. Unfortunately I was sitting on the bus when 15 minutes later, the photo opportunity of the day took place as they they returned with the MC-130 trailing both its hoses and the HH-60G was tucked up behind one of the refueling baskets with its boom extended. Weather was naff to say the least with dark clouds, strong breeze and trying to rain although it was reasonably warm. By the time I left it was blue sky and sunshine but still with a strong breeze. BBMF Dakota touched down just before the doors opened and it was available for viewing by the Burma Veterans during the morning. B-17 'Sally B' had a test flight just after lunch and then departed later on for a longer flight for a bit of crew training. Just before the flying display, the F-86 took off for Eastbourne, I think it was, and then the Dakota took to the air with a short display and then flew away to the east. Mark Miller was just about to start his display in the Auster Autocrat G-AGTO, representing the Military Auster's used in Burma, when the F-86 returned. The advertised BBMF Spitfire didn't turn up as the wind was probably above limits for it. Spitfire MH434/P-51 'Ferocious Frankie' and the HAC Hurricane were positioned out on the airfield for departure to the Rougham air show on Sunday. As I was leaving, 'Sally B' returned closely followed by the BBMF Dakota. Saturday 15 August 2009: 33rd visit of the year to Duxford and it's also Burma Star Day. ]]> Sun Aug 2 2009 RAF Museum Reserve Collection, MoD Stafford ~ 30th July 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1734139.html Courtesy of the Training & Development Flight at RAF Wyton a group of us from Wyton/Brampton/Henlow had a visit to the Royal Air Force Museum Reserve Collection at MoD Stafford on Thursday 30 Jul. We split into 2 groups with the Manager and Curator taking us around for a very informative visit. A tour apparently last about 3 hours but we had a 2 hour jog around as we were going to the National Memorial Arboretum in the afternoon. ]]> Thu Jul 30 2009 RAF Wyton Families Day ~ 24th July 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1733274.html Not being a front line station, the Families Days at RAF Wyton are a bit bereft of visiting and flying aircraft and rely mainly on passing traffic from the Families Day at Cottesmore or aircraft on transit to and from the air show at Lowestoft. Rain was forecast for the afternoon and as soon as the Falcons Parachute Team had touched down , the heavens opened for about 40 minutes. The Barnstormers went up after the storm and the grey sky, lightning and rumbling thunder giving a nice backdrop to the limbo, flour bombing and balloon bursting. All flying shots taken with a Tamron 200-500mm zoom. ]]> Fri Jul 24 2009 TFC Flying Legends Air Show, IWM Duxford ~ 12th July 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1725690.html Went down to Crash Gate D, entrance to ARCo/M11 end, for the Flying. Thoroughly enjoyed my 4 days at Duxford and actually got thrown out on Friday night. Was intending going on Saturday but every where was wet when I got up and the weather forecast for Sunday on Breakfast TV look better. Pity the sun wasn't shining more at the beginning of the flying display but I thoroughly enjoyed this show, and despite all the obstacles that were in the way a harty well done to everyone involved and I look forward to next year. Sunday 12 July 2009: Went down to Crash Gate D, entrance to ARCo/M11 end, for the Flying. Thoroughly enjoyed my 4 days at Duxford and actually got thrown out on Friday night. ]]> Sun Jul 5 2009 Classic Flight, Coventry 1940s/50s Photo Shoot ~ 13th June 2009 http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/c1713847.html On Saturday, 13th June, the volunteers of Classic Flight at Coventry Airport arranged a 1940s/50s style photo shoot with a bit of a twist. It started with a H&S/Parish Notice briefing and as there were no barriers, we had one volunteer to two photographers who were there purely to keep an eye on us and made sure we did not stray into unauthorised areas and allowed us any photo opportunities we required. Apart from the jets, there was access to virtually all the collections aircraft that were present both inside and out. We spent the morning having a wander around photographing anything outside and inside the hanger. Lunch was a bacon buttie, seems the norm for a photo shoot now, from Kates Kabin I think it was, and after lunch came the twist with glamour models who were posing in period costumes with the aircraft as a backdrop. A thoroughly enjoyable day out in the sunshine with an excellent opportunity to photograph not only aeroplanes but models as well and an excellent start by all the volunteers to what will hopefully will become a regular event. Despite the forecast for showers at Northolt, it held off but the clouds did roll in at times and lighting conditions ranged from flat to bright sunshine. I went around first with my camera on the monopod and then I went low level. Many thanks to Phil and Lee and the rest of the volunteers for a very enjoyable couple of hours on a warm Sunday afternoon.
